From third grade to 38 in one way or another I had found a way to the stage. At 38 in Graduate School, for dance, I tried to quit performing. The physical maintenance of being a dance performer heading towards my 40s was not something that I was looking forward to. Shortly after deciding that I did not want to perform any longer I met Maida Withers. You could say that Maida convinced me otherwise, she basically shamed me into performing a duet with her, by declaring that if she was still performing at 60 something that I at 38 had nothing to complain about. Maida said, “Dance in the body you are in now.” How could I say no? Ten years later, I’m still performing and collaborating artistically with Maida. I could not be more grateful to her for having pushed me into the present phase of my performing career. Dancing has never been more of a pleasure than it is now in my middle aged body.
Maida is an exceptional Dance Artist and her company Maida Wither Dance Construction Company has been blazing the way for four decades performing throughout Washington DC, and the World. The breadth and scope of her artist contribution to the field of dance is beyond measure. Maida approaches each new work of art seeking to reveal the hidden layers of human potential within the dance; she is always pushing the form into new territory, never repeating and never looking back. I’m eternally grateful to have shared in the creative journey with the shocking, the evocative, the daring, the activist, the inspiring, and the funny and brave Great Dance Artist Maida Withers.
